17 European Destinations That Seem Straight Out of a Fairy Tale

Castles perched on hills, medieval villages with half-timbered houses, and landscapes that look unreal… Some places in Europe truly feel like stepping into a fairy tale. A ranking unveiled by European Best Destinations highlights 17 destinations to explore in 2026, including several French sites among the continent’s most enchanting.

From Germany to Slovenia, European destinations that spark dreams

At the top of the ranking compiled by European Best Destinations is Eltz Castle in Germany. This fortress, owned by the same family since the 12th century, rises amid the hills and the Eltz Forest. Its spectacular setting even earned it as a backdrop for the film The Ninth Configuration, released in 1979. On Google Reviews, a visitor sums up their visit: “An exceptional experience, you really feel like you’re in a fairy tale”. They add: “You should absolutely take the guided tour; you’ll have an authentic castle experience. It feels like traveling back in time”.

Germany also features a second site in the top 10 with Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria. Often touted as the inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle, it is one of the country’s most visited monuments. A traveler writes on Google Reviews: “It’s the most beautiful castle in the world for a good reason. The details inside are astonishing”.

Spain is represented by Tossa de Mar on the Costa Brava, where an old fortified town overlooks beaches and Mediterranean coves. Other included destinations also include Prague (Czech Republic), Sintra (Portugal), Isola Bella and the Orcus Gardens of Bomarzo (Italy), Popeye Village in Mellieħa (Malta), the Alcázar of Segovia (Spain), or Craiova in Romania, whose Christmas market spans more than 280,000 square meters.

Mont Saint-Michel, Riquewihr, and Kaysersberg Represent France

France has three representatives in this ranking. The most emblematic is undoubtedly Mont-Saint-Michel, whose Gothic abbey towers over a tidal islet. UNESCO World Heritage-listed, the site draws millions of visitors each year eager to admire its unique architecture. On Tripadvisor, a traveler recalls: “My first impression on getting off the bus was stunning! It reminded me of The Lord of the Rings.” They continue: “It’s a totally unique experience”.

Spanning the Weiss and dominated by the ruins of its castle, this Alsatian village is also known for its colorful facades, half-timbered houses, and a fairy-tale atmosphere. With three destinations out of 17 in the ranking, France confirms that it remains one of the European countries where it is easiest to treat oneself to a fairy-tale escape without leaving the continent.
