• PETRIFIED FOREST

The region’s uplift created tensions that split the tree trunks. Today, wind and water continue to erode sediments and bring buried trunks to the surface. In some places, up to 90 meters of fossilized material remain to be excavated. It is one of the world’s largest fossil concentrations. About 225 million years ago, this high plateau was a vast floodplain crossed by numerous waterways. Large trees were carried by floods onto this plain and were covered with silt, mud, and volcanic ash. This blanket of sediments cut off oxygen and slowed the decay of the trunks. Gradually, silica-rich underground waters seeped into the wood and gradually filled the spongy tissues. During drier periods, the water evaporated, leaving silica in the cells of the wood. This process continued slowly, silica crystallized into quartz, providing a faithful mold of the internal structure and the external shape of the tree trunks. These trunks were preserved as petrified wood.
The park covers two sectors linked by a north-south orientation corridor: the northern sector is formed by a Triassic geological formation called Painted Desert (French: Désert peint).
The southern part contains most of the petrified trunks as well as Native American petroglyphs.
