It has been a long time, more than fifteen years now, that Michel Messager, a recognized specialist in the field of space tourism, speaks to us and writes about the subject (he is on his 9th book) on the topic.
But this time, as the founder of the Think Tank “Space Consult“, on the eve of this year’s presidential cycle, he aims to set the record straight in this field by publishing the book “A Plea for Space Research”.
Still an easy read, this volume targets those who are already interested in the space sector or who want to form a clearer idea of the usefulness of venturing into space, through numerous concrete examples presented across five thoroughly documented chapters:
– The contributions of Space to Medicine.
– The contributions of Space to Pharmacology and Vaccines.
– The contributions of Space to Daily Life.
– The contributions of Space to Economics and Business.
– The contributions of Space to Employment.

A Book Devoted to the Spin-Offs of Space Research in Our Daily Lives
Across the two hundred pages that make up this book, one learns a lot of things, most of which are unknown to the general public. Thus, did you know that:
The insulin pump was invented by Robert E. Fischell while he was working at NASA’s Applied Physics Laboratory and that these small pumps were originally used on Mars within the Viking landers to search for potential traces of life on the Red Planet.
Air-cushion shoes (Nike Air) were invented by Frank Rudy, an aerospace engineer at NASA,
who decided to apply technology initially developed for astronauts’ helmets to footwear.
After developing and testing for several years an “eye-tracking headset” in the ISS, we could thus apply this technology in the field of laser eye surgery.
We could also cite, in this contribution of space research: cardiac sutures, the PLX5622 drug preventing cognitive disorders, telemedicine, Ritonavir a drug used in HIV treatment, diapers, memory foam, scratch-resistant lenses, the marginal winglets of airplanes, GPS…

In this plea for space research, Michel Messager argues that it should be one of the elements of the candidates’ program for the presidency, recalling that Socrates, more than 400 years before Christ, wrote: “Man must rise above the Earth, to the far reaches of the atmosphere and beyond, for only then will he fully understand the world in which he lives.”
