Tony Parker Discovers a Little-Known Tribe in Angola on Rendezvous in an Unknown Land

As at the start of every episode, the guest has no advance knowledge of the place they will discover. For this new installment of Rendez-vous en terre inconnue, Tony Parker leaves the basketball courts to immerse himself with a people at the heart of southwestern Angola. Accompanied by Laury Thilleman, the champion encounters the Ovakuvale, a little-known semi-nomadic herding community that thrives on the edge of the world’s oldest desert.

Here, families live to the rhythm of the herds, the seasons, and the rains. They seek shelter in large circular enclosures protected by thorny barriers. In the center, a handful of low, round houses built with wood and earth compose a world that is at once simple and perfectly suited to this arid environment where the basketball player will spend several days.

A rainy season that remains elusive

When Tony Parker and Laury Thilleman arrive among the Ovakuvale, it is a particularly important moment of the year for the Ovakuvale. Indeed, the rainy season should mark the return of abundance after several months of transhumance.

But this year, the cycle is disrupted. The rains, sometimes torrential, are slow to arrive and the harvests are likewise delayed. Maize struggles to sprout, testing a community whose daily life depends on the climate, the land, and the herds.

As they spend time with them, the duo discovers the harshness of this way of life, but also the solidarity that binds the community. Ancestral traditions occupy a central place and accompany every facet of daily life. In this Angola in the midst of reconstruction, deeply marked by decades of civil war, Tony Parker and Laury Thilleman also observe the growing proximity of modernity, which offers some residents new possibilities for shaping their futures.

The episode ofRendez-vous en terre inconnue with Tony Parker is set to be broadcast on Tuesday, September 29 at 9:10 PM on France 2.

Clermont-Ferrand Sets Sail with the 2026 Travel Journal Rendezvous

Travel brings at least two pleasures: the pleasure of doing it and the pleasure of telling about it.

Everyone, in their own way, chooses according to their tastes, possibilities, and talents if they have any.

Some write, others prefer stills or cinema, but the majority are content to chatter away at happy hour or after a meal.

There is also another, less common, category that favors charcoal, pencil, brush, or marker that draw on Canson paper. These are carnetists.

If the word is unknown, or nearly so, to dictionaries and spelling checkers, it takes on full meaning in Clermont-Ferrand in mid‑November. Since the turn of the century, it is in the Auvergne capital that the International Travel Sketchbook Rendezvous takes place.

It brings together about 120 carnetists who present and comment on their drawings to more than 15,000 visitors expected in 2026.

Clermont by the Sea

The organizers have unveiled the poster. It is the work of a comic book author, Joël Alessandra, himself a carnetist.

He has turned the Auvergne capital into a seaside city. “Clermont-Ferrand has no sea – and that is precisely the starting point of this poster,” the author notes.

From his boat, the carnetist approaches the city by an impossible path: a sea crossing toward an inland volcanic city. This unlikely image embodies the very essence of carnet practice—the ability to reinvent reality, to bring forth the unexpected from the familiar (…) Clermont, with its ochre roofs and the black spires of its cathedral, appears as a dreamed‑of stopover, an inner port that every carnetist joins in their own way. »

All that remains is to wish the Travel Sketchbook a smooth voyage and a lovely port of call for thousands of cruise passengers!
