Terra Australia: Behind the Scenes of a Premium Bespoke Specialist [ABO]

On the French market, Australia-focused incoming operators form a diverse landscape with complementary positions.

Across Australia, a historic operator founded in Sydney and now owned by the Canadian Goway group since 2023, is today led by John Feenaghty, Managing Director.

JCM Destination Australia, established in 1998 by Jean-Christophe Merlant and present in Sydney, Cairns and Auckland, has repositioned itself on the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Events) segment and group operations, with a multilingual Francophone team.

Terra Australia, a relatively newer outfit, positions itself in premium tailor-made travel at a measured volume, exclusively B2B Francophone.

AOT Inbound is represented in France by Gary Paterson, General Manager Global Sales and Marketing, and Pan Pacific Travel by Sandra Feustel.

Among this diversity of approaches, Terra Australia embodies a singular stance: to refuse volume in order to preserve flexibility, to invest in long-term human relationships with Australian partners, and to defend a premium tailor-made approach rooted in field knowledge.

A perspective that deserves focus, at a moment when artificial intelligence is reshaping the production chains of tourism.

Premium tailor-made is not what you think

The first misconception to debunk: Australian premium tailor-made travel is not simply a sequence of five-star lodges.

For me, premium FIT is about focusing on the experience, not just the five-star accommodations“, says Alexandre El-Habouz, France head of Terra Australia.

When you return from a trip, you don’t remember where you slept. You remember the moments, the instants, the energies you perceived.

So premium tailor-made is not, for Terra, about the category of lodging, but a strategic stance: putting the human at the heart of the journey, and designing each itinerary as a precise answer to a unique profile. “What we seek for our clients is that they come back with experiences that have made them evolve in the way they travel“, adds Christophe Napierai, cofounder of Terra Australia. “You come back from your trip a little different.

The Terra model and its singularity

Terra Australia asserts a distinctive stance in the French market: a small, self-assured structure, 100% Francophone B2B, with a team split between France and Australia to ensure proximity to partner agencies. “Our size is our strength“, explains Alexandre El-Habouz.

We cannot promise volume to an Australian partner. So we are obliged to build a relationship with them. This flexibility allows us to work with suppliers that other incoming operators cannot offer, sometimes because they are too small, sometimes because they do not want the classic inbound model.

The example: a Pinnacles hotelier who refused major operators due to slow payments. “We pay immediately. It is this flexibility that allows us to work with very small structures.

This philosophy translates on the distribution side into an intentional targeting: Terra works primarily with the Selectour network, and with smaller, more confidential outfits like Les Ateliers du Voyage, Continents Insolites or Amplitudes. “We will rather focus on small agencies that have a very strong relationship with their clients, a very loyal clientele. Our aim is not to push volume for its own sake. We love offering beautiful journeys, Australia as we love it.

The on-the-ground selection method

On the method side, it is Christophe Napierai who details the invisible work behind each program. “The first thing is that everything stems from our on-the-ground recognitions.

We spend every year time in Australia to discover new providers, new hotels, and new experiences. We invest heavily in the field.

The Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE), the major annual B2B meeting for Australian tourism, complements this setup. “ATE helps to create links, to maintain human relationships, and not just exchanges of booking emails.

The 2026 edition in Adelaide, in May last year, allowed Terra to multiply supplier meetings over four intense days.

Another essential filter: the eco-responsible dimension. “We ask all our providers to adhere to an eco-responsible charter.” A stance that resonates directly with Tourism Australia’s Green is Our Gold strategy recently launched. “We are completely aligned. Our objective is that travellers stay longer in Australia, that they are not rushed. Time is what matters most.

AI in tailor-made travel: the human frontier

By 2027, the Rugby World Cup will focus the French market’s attention on Australia. “It’s going to be a huge event“, anticipates Christophe Napierai. “We have agreements to have the possibility to resell tickets, so we are ready.

This is an opportunity for French premium tailor-made travel to demonstrate what humans can still contribute in the face of a mass event. And to begin preparing the next air season now, in a routing landscape undergoing a major reconfiguration.

WeTravel Acquires Tourwriter to Strengthen Its Bespoke Travel Offering

WeTravel continues to develop in the high-end multi-day travel segment.

The American company announced, Wednesday, September 2, 2026, the acquisition of Tourwriter, a New Zealand-based company specializing in software for designers of customized travel and for incoming agencies (DMC).

The financial terms of the operation were not disclosed. This marks WeTravel’s first acquisition since its $92 million Series C funding in 2025, raised notably from Sapphire Ventures, Left Lane, Base10 and Cross Creek.

With this deal, WeTravel aims to strengthen its presence in the most complex and valued segment of the travel experiences market, which the company estimates at $271 billion.

Two complementary areas of expertise in bespoke travel

Founded in 2003, Tourwriter brings 23 years of expertise in developing software for professionals in the bespoke travel sector. Its platform today supports operators specializing in personalized experiences in 35 countries.

The company has notably developed features dedicated to itinerary creation, supplier management and their pricing, price and margin calculations, commissions, bookings, invoicing, accounting and data analytics.

According to WeTravel, Tourwriter generated more than one billion dollars of itinerary sales over the last two years.

On its side, WeTravel counts more than 10 000 travel businesses and more than 8 000 partners using its platform worldwide. Its system covers notably itinerary creation, online booking, task management, multi-currency payments, deposits and payment schedules, as well as the management and payment of suppliers.

The company has also recently launched WeTravel virtual and physical cards, available in more than 40 countries.

Growing demand for personalized travel

The acquisition comes as WeTravel observes a rise in demand for bespoke and luxury travel.

According to its Annual Trends Report 2026, based on more than one million bookings made on its platform and responses from thousands of professionals, 56% of operators consulted noted increased interest in high-end personalized travel bookings in 2025, compared with the previous year.

WeTravel’s booking data also show an acceleration in 2026. In the first half, bookings by organizers specializing in bespoke and luxury travel rose 16% year over year, while their dollar volume grew by 31%.

This growth, however, comes with increasing operational complexity. Each trip is built individually, meaning professionals must simultaneously manage supplier pricing, currencies, commissions, taxes, deposits and settlements with multiple providers.

Part of these operations still relies on a combination of specialized software, spreadsheets and banking tools, with manual re-entries between the different steps.

Platforms that will remain separate

In the initial phase, Tourwriter and WeTravel will continue to operate as two distinct platforms. WeTravel plans, however, to invest in the development of the Tourwriter product, notably by providing its international payment infrastructure and its AI tools.

We are thrilled to partner with Glenn and invest in the Tourwriter platform“, explains Ted Clements, CEO of WeTravel. The stated objective is to progressively integrate international payment solutions and the AI tools developed by WeTravel.

For Glenn Campbell, CEO and cofounder of Tourwriter, this operation opens “a new chapter” for the company, while maintaining its goal of helping luxury travel professionals improve profitability and client service.

No immediate changes for Tourwriter clients

WeTravel notes that current Tourwriter clients will keep the same product, the same teams, the same pricing and the same support.

In the coming months, they should progressively gain access to new international payment services and AI features developed by WeTravel.

Glenn Campbell will continue to lead Tourwriter. The team, consisting of about 30 employees spread across New Zealand, London and other regions worldwide, will join WeTravel’s international organization, which counts over 400 employees and has offices in Australia, Azerbaijan, the Netherlands, and the United States.

🥨Bretzel Travel: Making Bespoke Travel Sustainable

Bretzel Travel à l’ITB

CroisiEurope

At Bretzel Travel, we have set ourselves the mission of uncovering the beauties of Germany and Austria for French travelers. It begins with a team of travel enthusiasts, culture lovers, and fans of original experiences. Naturally, they decided to share them, striving to customize each offer so that it matches the traveler who will embark. Bretzel Travel is therefore not simply about proposing itineraries; it always aims to fully take into account the needs and desires of travelers and to guide them as best as possible by drawing on its own experiences. And here comes the twist! Eco-responsibility will inevitably be part of it, as it is written as one of the company’s founding principles.

The Central Role of the Local Operator

It is with a clear awareness of its unique position that the team approaches this responsibility. Positioned at the crossroads between the traveler seeking advice and services and the destination itself (choice of providers, experiences, and places visited), we have a unique opportunity to positively influence the overall impact of travel! So why not favor options that are gentler on the environment? For example: trains are an excellent alternative to long car journeys. We leave behind the polluting and noisy jet skis, and instead head out onto the lake by kayak or sailboat. Snowshoeing, bike discovery tours, visits to local farms… The possibilities are countless!

A Mindset We Share…

… with travelers :

Bretzel Travel stresses the importance of maintaining close relationships with the people who seek its services. In this way, it is able to effectively raise awareness during the exchanges conducted throughout itinerary design. Just before the trip, Bretzel Travel will provide participants with a Traveler / Traveler’s Charter of Responsibility.

… with partners :

This starts with a careful selection of local players who share the same values and awareness of the issues, but it goes far beyond that! A checklist to ensure the maintenance of as sustainable as possible excursions is, for instance, shared with our guides. Interactions with suppliers, client agencies, and other service providers are also an opportunity to share useful advice, destination recommendations, and lesser-known services. In recent years, an effective ecosystem has taken shape, mindful of the challenges and eager to integrate them into its operating methods.

The Travelife Partnership, the Final Step Before Certification

Words are fine, deeds are better… On June 5, 2026, Bretzel Travel officially achieved the status of Travelife Partner. This means that the agency meets more than 100 criteria of professional management covering respect and protection of biodiversity and human rights, in addition to attesting to the validity of its daily practices in energy efficiency among other things. For the team, this milestone brings recognition for the path traveled and confirms that the chosen direction is the right one.

A Future Made of Initiatives

Obviously, the effort continues far beyond the certification goals. To guide travelers in their choices from the discovery phase, Bretzel Travel is working on highlighting so-called “Low Carbon” itineraries that meet a set of criteria, notably by favoring certified establishments and gentle mobility for a positive environmental impact… This badge will be accompanied by a precise measurement of the kilograms of carbon emitted per traveler as well as a contribution donated to a decarbonization organization. Bretzel Travel aims, through these internal labels, to raise awareness among its users about the impact of activities in the tourism sector.

And this is (we hope) only the beginning! The planet is warming, and so are our heads…
