Travel in 2027: Seven Trends That Could Transform Your Next Vacation

What destinations and experiences will inspire travel in 2027? In its new annual report, Expedia Group identifies seven trends that could shape vacationers’ choices, from short escapes to stays inspired by films and TV series. The study draws on responses from 26,000 travelers across 16 countries, as well as search data and social media analysis. Here are the key developments to watch as you plan your next getaway.

Rising Destinations and Indulgent Getaways

Destinations of the Year

Some destinations are seeing a marked uptick in traveler interest. According to Expedia’s flight and accommodation search data, South Lake Tahoe, California, tops the 2027 list, up 195% from the previous period. This American mountain region is followed by Hyogo, Japan (+95%), then Punta del Este, Uruguay (+65%). Sedona, Arizona, rises 55%, while Busan, South Korea, gains 50%. In total, ten destinations make the ranking, including Holbox, Mexico; Perugia, Italy; and Chichester, United Kingdom. Six of them also meet the Smart Travel Health Check criteria, a framework that distinguishes destinations offering rich cultural and natural experiences along with responsible tourism management.

Micro-breaks

Why wait for the main holidays to travel? Micro-breaks, those one-night stays or brief getaways, are expected to appeal to more travelers in 2027. According to Expedia Group’s survey, 79% of respondents plan to book a one-night stay, compared with 83% among Gen Z and millennials. In France, one-night stay searches on Hotels.com rose by nearly 10% in a year. These short trips allow, among other things, celebrating an important event for 34% of respondents, attending a concert, show, or sports competition for 32%, or recharging between two longer journeys for 28%. For 45% of travelers, the main criterion remains finding a good deal.

A Return to Childhood

Adults also crave the carefree spirit of holidays gone by. This trend involves planning trips centered on play, playful activities, and moments shared with loved ones, away from everyday constraints. In total, 57% of travelers say they are likely to book this type of trip in 2027, a share that climbs to 71% among Gen Z and millennials. Motivations are varied: 69% want to experience a day without obligations, 64% want to spend more time with loved ones, and 56% seek a temporary escape from responsibilities. Mentions of carefree adult getaways on social media have also risen by 41% year over year.

Shared Hobbies

Personal passions are also becoming travel determinants. Photography, board games, creative workshops, or antiquing can now shape the choice of vacation rental. According to the study, 68% of travelers plan to travel in 2027 to pursue a hobby or activity they care about. This share reaches 79% among younger generations. For 41% of those interested, the aim is to practice their hobby in a new environment. The same proportion wants to meet or reconnect with people who share their interests. Board games top the activities cited for family or friends’ trips, ahead of photography, antiquing, and creative hobbies.

Unconventional Accommodations and Pop-Culture-Inspired Travel

The Set-Jetting

Films and TV series continue to shape destination choices. This phenomenon, known as set-jetting, involves traveling to a location discovered on screen. Nearly one in five travelers worldwide has already booked a destination after seeing it in a movie or series, according to Expedia Group. In France, the share reaches 30%. For 2027, several productions could reinforce this trend, notably The White Lotus season 4, tied to Cannes and Saint-Tropez, the upcoming season of Emily in Paris, which is slated to pass through Greece and Monaco, or The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, linked to Wellington, New Zealand. Nearly half of the travelers surveyed are already seeking or booking stays in destinations shown in productions that have not yet been released. This share rises to 58% among Gen Z and millennials.

Gothic Getaways

Hotels are no longer merely places to sleep; they can become attractions in their own right. In 2027, Gothic-style properties, castles, and historic buildings are expected to draw travelers seeking a distinctive atmosphere. According to Hotels.com, 65% of those surveyed want to book a Gothic-style hotel, compared with 71% among Gen Z and millennials. More than half of travelers, 56%, already choose an accommodation solely for its aesthetics or ambiance. Searches for castles on Hotels.com rose by 20% in a year. Interest in these stays aligns with a broader appeal for historic places, legends, and dark fantasy worlds.

The Allure of the Hinterland

Today’s latest trend identified by Expedia Group is the appeal of inland destinations, away from the most frequented coastal resorts. Nearly 58% of travelers who stayed in a vacation rental say they visited an inland destination in the past twelve months. Characterful small towns, valued for their historic heritage by 65% of those surveyed, are especially popular. Travelers also seek culture, cuisine, and local arts scenes (32%), want to venture off the beaten path (31%), or avoid crowds (29%). For 27%, more affordable prices than on the coast are also a factor. This trend highlights another way to discover a territory, prioritizing its villages, rural landscapes, and local life over its most famous tourist sites.

These seven trends, presented in Expedia Group’s Horizons 2027 report, reflect a range of travel desires, from new destinations to themed stays and shorter getaways. They are based on an online survey conducted from August 4 to September 1, 2026, with 26,000 adults across 16 countries, complemented by search data and analysis of social media conversations.

Civitatis Pro: Eight Years of Listening to Tourism Professionals to Transform How Experiences Are Sold

Aer Lingus

Eight years ago, Civitatis began working with travel agencies with a clear objective: to make available to the professional channel a selection of activities and experiences for destinations. Since then, the company has grown alongside agencies, tour operators and other players in tourism distribution, also adapting to a way of selling trips that is increasingly agile, connected, and demanding.

This journey has allowed identifying new needs. Because having a good product is essential, but the daily life of an agency requires more: tools that simplify operations, responsiveness in case of incidents, and, above all, a partner who knows their trade and can accompany them at every step of the sale.

All this learning is today reflected in Civitatis Pro, Civitatis’ ecosystem designed specifically for professionals in the tourism sector. As Verónica de Íscar, Chief B2B Sales Officer of Civitatis, explains: “Civitatis Pro was born from everything we have learned during these eight years of collaboration with agencies, tour operators and professionals in travel distribution in general: from our active listening, to our understanding of how they operate, and to adapting our offer to their real needs.”

From a simple product to an ecosystem designed for agencies

One of Civitatis’ strengths since its beginnings lies in its offer selection. Facing a model based solely on increasing the number of references, the company favors a carefully curated catalog of activities, excursions, guided tours, tickets, transfers and other destination-focused services, with quality as the main criterion.

But working with the professional channel has enriched this proposition. “For eight years, we have been continuously refining our solution for our 46,500 travel agencies, including the French ecosystem. Civitatis Pro is the culmination of this commitment. This new version takes a step forward by integrating management of group requests outside the platform and a tool for creating tailor-made itineraries. We have evolved toward a model where the B2B offers guidance, specialized support, and features designed specifically for our partners.” declares Georges Sans, Director of France Development at Civitatis.

Civitatis Pro is structured around four pillars: selected product, flexible technology, 24/7 support and commercial guidance. Four areas that cover different moments in the relationship between the agency, the platform and the traveler.

Carefully curated product: also facilitating recommendations

For a travel agent or a content creator, having thousands of alternatives does not always make the choice easier. That is why Civitatis Pro focuses on a pre-selected offering that helps to find the option suited to each client without turning the search into a complex process. From the must-dos of a destination to services like transfers, the offering allows enriching every trip from a single environment and with prestations selected according to quality criteria.

Flexible technology: adapting to each partner’s sales method

Selecting the product is only part of the equation. The way to access it and market it must also fit into how each company operates. That is why technology constitutes another pillar of Civitatis Pro. The platform offers different solutions and features so that agencies and partners can integrate the sale of experiences according to their own distribution model. The guiding principle is simple: technology should reduce friction, not add it. This implies developing tools designed not only for the final traveler but also for those who manage and market each booking.

24/7 support: when the sale becomes a journey

On-site experiences have a distinctive trait compared to other tourism products: the relationship with the client continues during the journey. A question, a modification, or an unforeseen event can occur thousands of miles away and at any moment. Having 24/7 support allows tourism professionals to provide after-sales assistance and support during the traveler’s experience. It is thus about extending the service beyond the transaction and bringing peace of mind both to the professional and to their client.

UN Tourism Social Innovation Challenge: 7 Projects to Transform Tourism

La Fondation Sommet Education et Les Roches dévoilent les sept finalistes du UN Tourism Social Innovation Challenge - Photo : Fondation Sommet Education

Climats du Monde

The Sommet Education Foundation and Les Roches unveil the seven finalists of the UN Tourism Social Innovation Challenge, a competition designed to back innovative projects that contribute to making tourism more sustainable, inclusive, and beneficial for local communities.

Launched in September 2025, the challenge drew 866 applications from 109 countries.

Nearly half of the submitted projects originated from Africa, illustrating the continent’s entrepreneurial dynamism in the tourism sector.

The seven selected projects are spread across three categories: community tourism, environment, accessibility and inclusion.

Solutions to Strengthen Local Tourism

In the category dedicated to community tourism, three initiatives were singled out.

In China, Lore leverages artificial intelligence to help safeguard traditional crafts and connect travelers with local communities through immersive cultural experiences.

In India, Local Narratives brings together travelers, students and rural communities through experiences that foster learning and local entrepreneurship.

In Tanzania, Ecodigital combines digital tools with community knowledge to support ecosystem restoration, climate resilience and the development of sustainable tourism.

Circular Economy and Regenerative Tourism in the Spotlight

Two projects were selected in the environmental category.

In Ghana, Okumkom Biodigital Investment converts organic waste produced by hotels and restaurants into proteins and organic fertilizers. The aim is to create a closed loop linking the hospitality and agricultural sectors.

In Brazil, Bio Fábrica de Corais relies on biotechnologies and regenerative tourism to contribute to the restoration of coral reefs, while raising awareness among visitors and communities about protecting marine ecosystems.

The third category focuses on accessibility and inclusion, featuring two projects that notably use artificial intelligence.

In Kenya, Signvrse develops 3D avatars capable of providing real-time sign-language interpretation to facilitate exchanges with Deaf and hard-of-hearing travelers.

In Portugal, Your Accessible Flight employs AI to assist travelers with disabilities during their air travel. The solution also provides airlines and airports with digital tools to enhance their accessibility services.

Support to Accelerate the Projects

Partner of the competition, Les Roches Marbella will mentor the seven laureates through on-campus training and access to its international network dedicated to entrepreneurship and innovation.

The goal is to equip project leaders with enhanced skills, broaden their networks, and speed up the deployment of solutions that address the social and environmental challenges facing tourism.

Air France Launches Paris Stopover to Transform Layovers into Tourist Stays

Air France et Extime Travel lancent officiellement « Paris Stopover » - Depositphotos.com @alexeynovikov

Costa Rica

Asia: The Major Festivals That Can Transform Your Trip into an Unforgettable Experience

Bhoutan © DTH Travel

Dream Yacht

In this quest for cultural immersion, festivals and traditional celebrations present a tremendous opportunity. For a few days, sometimes a few weeks, a destination reveals its most precious aspects: its beliefs, its traditions, its history, its creativity and its identity.

For tourism professionals, these events also constitute a powerful differentiating lever. Building an itinerary around a festival or a cultural event allows offering a unique experience, difficult to compare with a classic circuit, while giving real added value to the journey.

Asia, with its exceptional cultural diversity, offers year-round a multitude of celebrations that deserve to be integrated into programs for 2026 and 2027.

When an entire country goes into festive mode

Certain celebrations literally transform a destination.

In Bhutan, the famous Tshechus bring together local communities, monks and pilgrims around sacred dances performed in the fortress-monasteries of the Himalayan kingdom. The Paro Tshechu (18 to 22 March 2027) and the Thimphu Tshechu (21 to 23 September 2026) rank among the country’s most spectacular events.

Japon © DTH Travel

In Japan, the festival calendar rhythmically marks the seasons. From the monumental sculptures at the Sapporo Snow Festival in February to the majestic floats of the Gion Matsuri in Kyoto in July, and the timeless magic of cherry blossoms in spring, each period of the year offers a different view of Japanese culture.

Thaïlande © DTH Travel

In Thailand, the Yi Peng Lantern Festival of Chiang Mai (November 24-25, 2026) remains one of Asia’s most iconic experiences. Thousands of lanterns illuminate the sky simultaneously, creating an atmosphere filled with spirituality and emotion. If you wish to offer this experience to your clients, DTH Travel still has spaces available to attend this event.

Celebrations that tell a country’s soul

Beyond the spectacle, some events allow a glimpse into the spiritual and cultural dimension of destinations. In Cambodia, Pchum Ben, the Ancestors’ Festival, offers a rare immersion into Khmer Buddhist traditions. From October 10 to 12, 2026, families gather in pagodas to honor past generations.

A few weeks later, the country shifts to a completely different ambiance with Bon Om Touk, the Water Festival (November 23-25, 2026), which makes Phnom Penh pulse to the rhythm of boat races, concerts and popular celebrations.

In Malaysia, Thaipusam (January 22, 2027) impresses with the fervor of pilgrims climbing the Batu Caves’ famous steps in a spectacular display of faith.

In Sri Lanka, from July to October (peaking in August and September), the Minneriya Elephant Gathering is one of the year’s major highlights. Each dry season, herds of elephants gather around the Minneriya reservoir, producing one of Asia’s most impressive wildlife spectacles. The moment is especially striking in the late afternoon, when the animals arrive at the reservoir’s shores bathed in the sunset light. This natural phenomenon offers a unique immersion into Sri Lankan biodiversity and perfectly illustrates the link between nature, conservation, and responsible tourism.

Philippines © DTH Travel

The Philippines also offers a unique experience with the Sinulog, Ati-Atihan and Dinagyang festivals in January 2027. For several weeks, the streets transform into giant stages where music, dance and religious traditions blend.

The opportunity to craft unique journeys

However, building an itinerary around an event requires careful preparation. Festival periods often bring high hotel demand, specific logistical constraints and larger crowds. This is where local expertise becomes essential to select suitable accommodations and activities, or to combine the event with nearby less-visited destinations.

The goal is not merely to attend a celebration, but to allow travelers to understand its meaning and to experience it in the best possible conditions.

At DTH Travel, our local teams across 14 destinations in Asia assist tourism professionals in designing tailor-made itineraries that integrate these major cultural milestones, while preserving the authenticity and comfort of the experience.

Because beyond the destination itself, it is often the moments of celebration that leave the most lasting memories.

To imagine your next itineraries, the DTH Travel teams are at your disposal.
