Cultural Travel: The Voyage Companies Revive the Terra Incognita Brand [ABO]

After revitalizing Adventure and Volcanoes, Les Compagnies du Voyage continues its development with the revival of Terra Incognita.

Jean-Christophe Guérin, the group’s President, already knew Terra Incognita from its original history.

The brand had been created at the end of the 1990s within the Atalante universe, then put to sleep in 2010. Guérin learns at the end of 2025 that it was still owned by the original group.

« If you do nothing with it, I’m interested. I’d be willing to take it back. I might have a project », he says.

Without a clearly defined idea at the outset, the conflict in the Middle East that erupted in late February accelerates its implementation. With an objective: to fidéliser the clientele on other types of travel.

Cultural journeys through experiences

<img src=”https://www.tourmag.com/my/tourmag/site/version2020/regie-video/pixel.png” width=”1″ height=”1″ style=”border:0px” id=”debloquage_article_abonnement”>With Vie Sauvage, a specialist in nature and wildlife travel, Fika Voyages for walking, cycling and train journeys, and Aventure et Volcans around the discovery of volcanoes, the group already had a strong positioning in adventure and discovery travel.

However, to keep this clientele engaged, Jean-Christophe Guérin needed a new string to his bow: « For the last two years, we have noticed that the people who travel with us and are very satisfied do not necessarily want their next project to be a nature trip. For many, it’s more of a cultural journey » he explains.

« Terra Incognita takes a place somewhat in mirror of what Vie Sauvage does in tailor-made fashion, in a more cultural dimension », the leader continues.

This cultural dimension, Les Compagnies du Voyage want to develop through discoveries, but also through experiences.

The brand will thus be able to offer a meeting with an artisan who exceptionally hosts travelers, a dinner at private homes sharing a passion, an immersion in an artistic universe or access to experiences that are hard to find in traditional tourist circuits.

« Each of us has our own Terra Incognita, he emphasizes. « Because we do bespoke travel, we want to start from what the client shares with us, from their desires and imagination, to then build the itinerary. This is how we want to launch the project. »

Terra Incognita: around fifteen destinations

Jean-Christophe Guérin - Les Compagnies du Voyage

Some experiences may be offered only once or twice a year, depending on the availability of people or the events involved.

Terra Incognita could also construct trips around festivals or events with a cultural, artistic or religious dimension. Small-group departures are also contemplated when the experience itself justifies sharing the journey with other participants or with an expert.

These collective departures should however remain minority, around 5 to 10% of the offer. Around fifteen destinations should form the initial base of the offering, with a presence in Europe, in Asia, in India and in Oceania. But the principle is to be able to respond to a much broader demand.

« This can also be in France. » adds the leader. The tour operator intends to rely on the know-how of the current teams: « 50% of the employees have knowledge that goes beyond the scope of the current brands. »

The group will also rely on independent consultants and specialists capable of intervening on specific topics.

The full Terra Incognita site is set to launch in the autumn. In the meantime, the brand is already developing its universe around a dream box, designed as an entryway to travel.

In some cases, Terra Incognita may even push the element of surprise further, letting the traveler discover their program progressively, or even at departure.

« We take the brief and let them discover their trip, either at the airport, or day by day, as it unfolds », describes Jean-Christophe Guérin.

An approach that echoes the notion of a journey into unknown land

Voyages Gallia Launches Gallia Andina, a Peru-Focused Brand

Costa Rica

After Iceland, Peru takes the stage.

Voyages Gallia has just launched Gallia Andina; a new brand entirely dedicated to the South American destination. The objective: to capitalize on strong internal expertise to stand out in the market.

« Today, to emerge in the digital universe, one needs a distinct identity. Gallia remains a generalist brand, but some destinations deserve a specific positioning », explains Bruno Peynichou, CEO of Voyages Gallia.

This new entity was born from a human story. Antoine Ledent, the group’s marketing director, lived three years in Peru and his wife is Peruvian. An in-depth knowledge of the ground that led the company to build a dedicated production.

Beyond the classic routes linking Lima, Arequipa, Lake Titicaca, Cusco and Machu Picchu, Gallia Andina intends to highlight lesser-known regions, particularly the north of the country and the vestiges of the pre-Inca Moche and Chimú civilizations.

The offering targets both groups and individuals, with escorted tours, self-drive itineraries, and thematic stays around Peruvian gastronomy and hiking.

« We have already sold several groups to associations and corporate committees. The idea now is also to develop individual clients », says Bruno Peynichou.

To support this launch, several presentation evenings will be organized in the coming months in Paris, Toulouse and Lyon.

A strategy already proven with Iceland

The creation of Gallia Andina fits into a process already experimented by the group with its dedicated brand for Iceland.

« This specialization has allowed Voyages Gallia to be identified as a reference player for the destination, notably among groups », explains Bruno Peynichou.

« Travel operators today must provide real added value. This comes through destination expertise, trusted local partners and differentiating products »,
he adds.

This logic is also reflected in the group’s other productions, notably in Croatia where Voyages Gallia offers cruises on small yachts with around forty passengers.

Business travel remains the growth engine

Voyages Gallia lance Gallia Andina, marque dédiée au Pérou. @voyages gallia

If Peru is the year’s novelty, the main growth driver remains business travel. Voyages Gallia is expected to generate around 45 million euros in business volume this year, with EBITDA near 1.3 million euros.

Of this total, nearly 30 million euros come from business travel.

The growth is largely propelled by the signing of a pan-European contract with the American company Intuitive, specialized in medical technologies.

After managing the travel of the French subsidiary, Voyages Gallia has since late 2024 taken over all of the group’s professional travel in Europe.

This ramp-up required the recruitment of around ten additional employees and the deployment of a multilingual service covering five languages.

Golf, groups and technology on the program

The two other historic lines of business for the tour operator, cultural group travel and golf stays under the Golf Around the World brand, each represent around 9 million euros of business volume.

« We were already among the leading players in golf travel in France and we are now expanding into French-speaking Switzerland and German-speaking Switzerland with a dedicated site in French and German », he says. To support this strategy, a colleague based in Annecy is in charge of business development on the Swiss market.

At the same time, the company continues its technological transformation. Several automation projects are being studied to optimize the processing of requests and allow teams to focus more on advising and assisting customers.

For 2026, Bruno Peynichou presents a measured but committed ambition: to reach between 47 and 50 million euros in business volume while keeping the DNA of a human-sized company.

« We are not looking to become a giant in the sector. However, when approaching 50 million euros in business volume, one must be extremely structured », he concludes.

Colombus Voyages: How Its Writing Contest Boosts Brand Image

Costa Rica

It is a writing contest that is carving out a place on the agenda of aspiring writers, and even established authors.

Everybody told me, you’ll see, you won’t receive anything. The site Texte à la pelle runs contests, and when they have 50 stories, that’s the maximum, so I think travel and writing captivate people,” enthuses Nathalie Pierret, founder of the agency and of the contest.

And it’s no understatement to say that the 2026 event found its audience.

There were more than 2,700 people registered for 570 submissions, compared to 415 the year before.

The success is very real and, as in the previous year, an awards ceremony was organized in the presence of the four winners, but also of a few loyal clients.

There were about sixty people present. It was a fantastic evening. This is the kind of event that helps distinguish a travel agency from a traditional one. Not only does it shape our brand image and our notoriety, but it also makes us somewhat more relevant in our communications,” shares Charly Verchère, the CEO of Colombus Voyages.

It must be noted that beyond the prestige of winning, the winner left with two tickets to the destination of her choice on Air France’s long-haul network.

The contest “gives a great image of Colombus Voyages”

On the other end of the line, the winner, Sarah Jeanmonnot, takes us on an internal and personal journey, in which her heroine revisits the places where she spent the early weeks of her life, thousands of kilometers from her current daily life.

It is in India, like in many stories of this second edition, that the journey unfolds.

We receive testimonies from participants that are incredible. I recall a couple who reimmersed themselves in a trip cut short because of Covid. They were supposed to depart for six months.

Ultimately, by writing within the contest, the urge to escape and to continue this stay returned to them.
Recently, they sent us an email from Patagonia to thank us for organizing the contest. They were finishing their journey after spending three months in Latin America.
” They restore their faith in travel through writing, and this is remarkable.

I feel that writing triggers something incredible in people. Rewriting their story makes them relive emotions and powerful moments.

In response to this enthusiasm, we decided to organize a third edition.

The fact that the contest is open to everyone, even to those who have never written, creates something around the agency. It gives a great image of Colombus Voyages.

Whether among clients or in the industry, I am regularly approached and congratulated for this initiative, explains Nathalie Pierret.

To read : Colombus Voyages: journeys of a mother… into a son !

For this second edition, the Nîmes-based agency forged partnerships with Le Petit Futé and a writing school called Les Mots.

This latter probably partly explains the better quality of the narratives read by the jury.

The Colombus Voyages team also had to implement a social media communications strategy, then approach bookstores to give the contest more visibility.

The workload is real, but the agency’s image is enhanced by it. And this isn’t the only advantage: the contest also serves as a source of inspiration for the store managers.

India, revelation of the contest and Colombus Voyages’ new destination

During the ceremony, Maxime Jammes, author of “Qui roulera verra“, won five nights at You & Me Maldives, a resort on a private island.

This time, the story does not unfold in India, but a few dozen kilometers away… in Sri Lanka.

The journey does not go as planned. A couple traveling around the island are involved in a scooter accident. The man suffers a serious fracture of the femoral neck and ends up hospitalized on site.

Tossed between different facilities, his ordeal becomes a true crucible that, instead of creating distance between the two young people, gives rise to great solidarity and reveals the strength of their love.

India seems to be a popular destination among lovers of adventure and writing, at least among those who took part in the event. With its guaranteed sense of immersion, its strong culture, and its many facets, this country-continent attracts and inspires.

This is not a destination we sold a lot of up to now. But, as we read the readings and heard the jury’s feedback, we decided to put India more in the foreground to ride this traveler appeal.

One of our salespeople went on an education tour just a few days ago to become familiar with the destination.

We are not organizing this contest for commercial purposes, but beyond nudging us toward destinations to push, the event also brings us customers.

We have added new contacts to our newsletter and, during the contest, we received about ten inquiries, even though there was no commercial strategy behind it,
” continues Charly Verchère.

The other countries most frequently appearing in the candidates’ writings are Morocco and Mauritius.

Colombus Voyages: “a third edition that could be the last”

The two last prizes were awarded to Axelle Simon for Sans filtre.

She will be able to travel five nights to Zanzibar thanks to her story recounting a border crossing between Slovenia and Italy that did not unfold as planned, due to an unaccommodating taxi driver.

This year, a special prize for emotion was also awarded to the tale “Revenir vers elles.”

A moving account of a father in mourning who rebuilds himself gradually through travel, after the loss of a child. If the first stay does not erase the pain, it opens the way to possible rebuilding.

To read : An agency launches a writing contest around the… travel!

It is on Belle-Île-en-Mer that his renaissance takes place, during an off-season stay that will give rise to other getaways on this sea-swept island, now a place of introspection and a calmer reconnection with his daughter.

The author, Alain Thiesse, was given a voucher to spend with Colombus Voyages. After two successful editions, what can the agency hope for next?

There will be a third edition, which could be the last. It takes a lot of energy to run the contest. Then it becomes increasingly difficult to find channels to disseminate the information. There may be other editions; we are still thinking about it. It is also possible that the contest adopts another format, such as a photo contest. We do not want to stage the edition too many times, but, whatever happens, we will always stay within the artistic realm,” confides the agency’s CEO.

This time, the best entries will not be published, but the organizers are considering having storytellers read the texts to immortalize this opus in a novel way.

The theme of the next edition is currently under discussion. It could take the form of a starting phrase that budding writers, or more experienced ones, will have to complete to begin their tale.

And you, which phrase would you like to start your next story with?

Hyatt Launches Destination by Hyatt Brand in Uzbekistan

Hyatt implante sa marque "Destination by Hyatt" en Ouzbékistan

CroisiEurope

Integration of Wellness, Culinary Offering, and Environmental Management

J.-F. Rial (Voyageurs du Monde): We’re Launching the Brand Internationally

In this period of watchful waiting on the part of travel agencies, some are taking the opportunity to refresh their teams’ knowledge through training, educational tours and other initiatives, while others are using the calmer moment to launch projects.

Voyageurs du Monde decided not to let current events set the pace.

The fifth-largest French tour operator, according to our ranking based on 2024 figures, chose this quieter period to launch its global English-language site.

It is a platform aimed at the world English-speaking clientele. Previously, we had a site dedicated to English-speaking customers, but we did not have a global interface accessible from anywhere in the world and adapted to our different products.

We are increasingly serving English-speaking clients who do not live in the countries where we are already established, as is the case in the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States.

We therefore wanted to provide a response to these clients
“, explains Jean-François Rial, CEO of Voyageurs du Monde.

Moreover, the group’s English subsidiary will become Original Travel by Voyageurs du Monde, in order to reinforce the brand image beyond the Channel.

And while examples of French travel companies expanding internationally are rather rare, even if FRAM recently set up in the Benelux, for Jean-François Rial’s company the internationalisation of the group has been a reality for a long time.

Since 2008, VDM opened a branch in Brussels, then three years later in Geneva. In 2016, the brand established itself overseas, in Canada, before settling in the United States in 2022, with the acquisition of Extraordinary Journeys.

Brand Internationalisation: “an important milestone for Voyageurs du Monde”

The challenge is therefore to introduce the brand into markets where it is not yet physically present.

This could include Scandinavia, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Africa, or any other territory with a customer base for this type of product.

We will launch, within two weeks, a stronger international push for the Voyageurs du Monde brand. We have English-speaking advisors all over the world, so it will be easy to respond to demand.

This is an important step for Voyageurs du Monde. We are shifting to a higher dimension. We are truly launching the brand internationally, particularly in the area of public relations, where until now we relied mainly on word-of-mouth outside our borders. This time, we have a dedicated campaign
“, explains the company’s CEO.

By the way, the group’s English subsidiary will become Original Travel by Voyageurs du Monde, to solidify the brand image across the Channel.

And while examples of French travel companies going international are fairly rare, even if FRAM recently established itself in the Benelux, for Jean-François Rial’s company, the internationalisation of the group has been a reality for a long time.

Since 2008, VDM opened an office in Brussels, then three years later in Geneva. In 2016, the brand expanded beyond the Atlantic, to Canada, before establishing itself in the United States in 2022, with the acquisition of Extraordinary Journeys.

Voyageurs du Monde to Open Its First Agency in Germany

This new chapter thus marks the culmination of this development.

We generate nearly €100 million in international turnover, i.e., around 30% of our activity, which is significant. We do not have a perfectly fixed objective, although we would like international to account for about 50% of our revenues in the medium term“, states the leader, setting a target without a precise deadline.

To achieve this, beyond launching the site and its large-scale press relations campaign, products will be somewhat adapted according to the client’s origin.

This is not all. Even if this operation does not come with opening new offices in an English-speaking country, a new Voyageurs du Monde agency will soon open in Europe.

In September 2026, we will open an agency in Munich, to complement the one in Zurich. Agencies are more like offices for the sellers. They no longer really help to mesh the territory or attract customers, but rather serve as places to meet clients, travelers, and host events,” explains Jean-François Rial.

And international expansion will also involve new cruise ships.

Voyageurs du Monde to Welcome Two New Vessels

Following the Steam Ship Sudan and the two dahabiyahs already sailing the Nile, Voyageurs du Monde will expand its fleet in the coming years.

In 2028, we will inaugurate two new magnificent ships, in the spirit of the Steam Ship Sudan.

These are steam-powered vessels nearly a century old. Like the other boats in the fleet, they will be stationed in Egypt. This order aims to meet the demand of international clients, because the Steam Ship Sudan is fully booked
“, rejoices the Voyageurs du Monde CEO.

For remembrance, its first steamship was directly drawn from the Thomas Cook & Son fleet, the late company behind the origins of travel agencies and the modern tourism industry.

This same ship is even said to have inspired Agatha Christie for her famous novel Death on the Nile, following a cruise she took with her husband in 1933.

Built in 1920 by the Bulaq shipyard in Egypt, the vessel was acquired by Voyageurs du Monde, which gave it a facelift in 2007.

It features five suites and 18 cabins. These developments take place amid a challenging context for the French tourism industry.

Voyageurs du Monde: activity is “quite average” and there will be no restart before summer

It is quite average, not catastrophic. We are following a trend less dire than that of our peers. What I feel is that B2B is accelerating the slowdown in sales: when we are at -10%, they are at -30%.

May is starting off very badly. I think the activity recovery will not occur before the summer. In my view, the summer will be compromised; it will be very average.

I am not really worried about what comes next, because either a peace agreement will be reached in the coming month and things will pick up, though not fully compensating for the lost earnings, or there will be no such agreement and clients will adapt. They will cope with the conflict and its consequences.

The year 2026 will probably be less good than the previous ones, but we are financially solid. We have no debt and we possess equity.
concludes a calmly prepared leader.

It’s worth noting that the United States, which had been at the top of the list of best-selling destinations for the operator in the wake of the health crisis, has been weathering the impact more smoothly in recent weeks.

If the country is not a safe haven, the bleed seems contained: the decline is no longer 70%, as it could have been in the past, but now hovers around 20%.

This shows that customers are not resentful and adapt very quickly to crises, whether political, geopolitical, or economic.

Cristiano Ronaldo Co-Exports His Luxury Restaurant Brand TATEL to Malta

IFTM

After Madrid, Ibiza, Dubai and Riyadh, Tatel has just established its concept blending Hispano-Mediterranean-inspired cuisine with a music program at the heart of the Maltese archipelago.

Conceived by Grace Design Studio, this new space accommodates 182 covers. The interior design draws on the 1920s Art Deco style while integrating contemporary elements through bespoke wood and textile arrangements. The venue revolves around a main dining room, a lounge equipped with a DJ booth, a private area, and an outdoor terrace set along the sea to blend with the surrounding coastline.

At the heart of this installation, management pursues a strategy to diversify the region’s dining offering. The culinary programme highlights reinvented traditional Spanish recipes under the supervision of the globally renowned executive chef Juan Antonio Medina, who has notably worked in the kitchens of elBulli.

The menu features the brand’s signature dishes, such as their rice with beef ribs or their cheesecake recipe, complemented by a selection of beverages and Spanish and international wines.

An opening rooted in the development of the local tourism offering

This installation forms part of the broader transformation of St. George’s Bay, a northeast coastal district of Malta undergoing economic redevelopment. The establishment will be one of the pillars of Lifestyle Group’s development project, which plans to introduce seven distinct concepts along this coastline for the season.

Manuel Campos Guallar, cofounder of TATEL, justifies this geographic choice: « St. George’s Bay is becoming one of the Mediterranean’s most exciting lifestyle destinations, and we are proud to bring the TATEL experience here alongside Lifestyle Group and the DeBono family at their Hard Rock Hotel. From gastronomy to music to atmosphere and service, we want every guest to feel something special. »

For Robert DeBono, CEO of Lifestyle Group, this arrival validates the upscale shift of the sector: « The arrival of TATEL adds another dimension to Malta’s evolving culinary and entertainment scene. We are proud to bring this spirit to St George’s Bay as part of the island’s ongoing hotel offering evolution. »
